STRINGSTRING
STRING protein interaction network
Nodes:
Network nodes represent proteins
splice isoforms or post-translational modifications are collapsed, i.e. each node represents all the proteins produced by a single, protein-coding gene locus.
Node Color
colored nodes:
query proteins and first shell of interactors
white nodes:
second shell of interactors
Node Content
empty nodes:
proteins of unknown 3D structure
filled nodes:
a 3D structure is known or predicted
Edges:
Edges represent protein-protein associations
associations are meant to be specific and meaningful, i.e. proteins jointly contribute to a shared function; this does not necessarily mean they are physically binding to each other.
Known Interactions
from curated databases
experimentally determined
Predicted Interactions
gene neighborhood
gene fusions
gene co-occurrence
Others
textmining
co-expression
protein homology

SLC22ASLC22A family member (SLC22A) encodes a plasma membrane transporter and a member of the conserved family of SLC22A transporters. The product of SLC22A is preferentially localized in the dendrites of mushroom body neurons, where it functions to terminate synaptic transmission from cholinergic projection neurons through uptake of the released neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Impairing the function of SLC22A enhances the acquisition and retention of olfactory memory by allowing the neurotransmitter signal from projection neurons to be more persistent. (568 aa)
Predicted Functional Partners:
OSCP1
Organic solute carrier partner 1.

CarT
Carcinine transporter (CarT) encodes a transporter belonging to the SLC22A transporter family that is involved in the photoreceptor histamine-carcinine cycle. Histamine neurotransmitter is released by photoreceptors and cleared by uptake into glia, where it is converted to carcinine. The product of CarT transports carcinine back to photoreceptors, where it is hydrolysed by the product of t to restore the pool of histamine; Belongs to the major facilitator (TC 2.A.1) superfamily. Organic cation transporter (TC 2.A.1.19) family.

Balat
Beta-alanine transporter; Beta-alanine transporter required for the uptake of beta- alanine by the glia. Required for the recycling process of the neurotransmitter histamine in photoreceptor neurons of the compound eye and therefore for photoreceptor synaptic transmission. Following histamine release from photoreceptors and its uptake by glia, histamine is conjugated to beta-alanine by e/Ebony to form the inactive metabolite, carcinine.
